Property insurance a concern

Burned out buildings have drawn complaints from residents and those concerns would be addressed under a proposed ordinance that requires property owners to be insured. The St. Marys City Council approved the fire-loss escrow program ordinance for publication Monday. The ordinance requires "casualty and fire legal liability insurance for all property owners letting property for occupancy in the City of St. Marys."Anyone who owns property in the city will be required to obtain a minimum of $50,000 in fire legal liability insurance and casualty insurance to remove or replace the building. The property owner must use insurance money to restore or demolish the building if a fire or loss is covered by insurance.Property owners will have to provide insurance information and place the insurance company name, policy number and policy expiration date on their rental property registration form or provide the city with a copy of casualty and fire liability policies. The city will not provide a registration certificate unless that information is provided. The city must also be informed if there are any changes in policies or coverage or if coverage is canceled.
